Home Remedies and Herbs for Kidney Failure

What is Kidney Failure?

Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys are unable to filter toxic and other wastes from the body’s blood and urine. When kidney filtering fails, the toxins, electrolytes and excess fluids are unable to be excreted and build up in the systems and other organs. Dangerous levels put the body out of balance and become poisonous.3

Kidney failure can be acute or chronic. Acute kidney failure develops suddenly and rapidly, sometimes over several hours or days. Acute failure presents clear and distinct symptoms whereas chronic or long-term kidney failure may exist for months or years before seriously affecting other body parts or systems.1,2

Acute kidney failure can be fatal if unattended, however with early treatment most cases of acute kidney failure can be cured without permanent damage. Chronic kidney failure is often irreversible and can only be controlled by artificial filtering or dialysis or by having a kidney transplant.3

Advanced kidney failure is end-stage kidney failure, end-stage renal failure or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). 1

What Causes Kidney Failure

Acute kidney failure causes are usually brought on by another acute or suddenly occurring disease. Acute failure can also result from injury to a kidney or related organ. Chronic kidney failure is almost always the result of a lengthy and pre-existing disease which leads to the breakdown of the kidneys and their total failure to function.

Other kidney failure causes include the following diseases:

  • Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Autoimmune kidney disease
  • Alcoholism

Kidney failure causes can also include the following injuries:

  • Devastating blow to kidneys
  • Dehydration
  • Decreased blood flow from burns or shock
  • Pregnancy or childbirth complications
  • Infections to urinary tract or blood system
  • Illicit drug use

Kidney Failure Symptoms

Kidney failure symptoms for acute cases present suddenly and noticeably. Chronic kidney failure symptoms take longer to materialize but the results are much more severe when presented. Usual kidney failure symptoms include:

  • Difficulty and/or pain in urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Weakness, fatigue and loss of energy
  • Fluid retention causing swelling of muscles and joints
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Breath odor and metallic taste in mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache, drowsiness and confusion
  • Seizures or coma in extreme cases
