Home Remedies and Herbs for Alzheimer's Disease

What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease is a type of progressive dementia that interferes with thinking, memory, and behavior. It’s the most common form of dementia, and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.1 Alzheimer's disease causes irreversible damage to the brain. It slowly destroys your ability to think and remember until you are unable to perform simple daily tasks. Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 50% of the American population over the age of 85.4 Alzheimer’s natural treatments have shown to help improve brain function and reduce symptoms. Natural treatments can also help in Alzheimer’s disease prevention

What Causes Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease, like all other forms of dementia, is caused by the damage and dying of brain cells. Over time, brain cells slowly become more damaged and die off, leading to brain shrinkage. This is what impacts cognitive function, which results in the known Alzheimer’s disease symptoms.5 Commonly, Alzheimer’s disease patients exhibit two type of abnormalities in the brain. These abnormalities are believed to be indicators of Alzheimer’s disease causes. The brain abnormalities in Alzheimer’s patients include:5

  • Plaques - Clumps of protein collect in the brain and interfere with brain cell communications. When the cell communication is interfered with, it can damage and kill off brain cells. As more protein plaques build, more damage is caused.
  • Tangles - Tangles happen when healthy protein extensions that are meant to support a transport system, end up twisting inside the brain. This prevents the transport of nutrients. Without nutrients to support cellular brain function, brain cells will just die off.
What causes these attacks and abnormalities isn’t exactly known. Researchers feel that it’s likely a combination of multiple factors that puts people at risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Some possible alzheimer’s disease causes and risk factors include:5
  • Exposure to environmental toxins that cause free radical damage
  • Genetics and family history of alzheimer’s
  • Poor lifestyle habits
