Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR), also called central serous chorioretinopathy, is a condition that affects the macula—the central part of the eye’s retina. It occurs when fluid builds up in the macula, causing distorted and blurry vision. CSR can often get better on its own, causing no long-term harm to the eye or the vision. However, the more frequently someone develops CSR, the more risk there is of it causing permanent damage. Anyone can develop CSR, but it commonly affects younger or middle-aged men.1,2
What Causes Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR)?
CSR occurs when fluid leaks into the retina and builds up, causing a blurred vision. The retina contains multiple layers of tissue, which protect the retina and prevent fluid from passing. One of the layers of the retina is called the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Its mainly designed to prevent such fluid buildup. However, when the RPE has small cracks or breaks, it can allow fluid to pass through. As the fluid collects, it causes pressure on the macula, causing the symptoms of CSR.1,2
It’s unclear why some people are more prone to developing CSR than others. However, researchers feel that CSR may occur more frequently with these risk factors:
