Home Remedies and Herbs for Chronic Mucus

What is Chronic Mucus?

Chronic mucus is a condition where there is a continuous excess buildup of mucus (phlegm) in the upper chest, lungs, sinuses or the back of the throat. It’s also referred to as chronic mucus hypersecretion. Rather than being a condition in itself, chronic mucus is actually a symptom of another possible underlying condition such as asthma, allergies or chronic bronchitis.1 Chronic mucus is characterized by a long-lasting presence of mucus buildup in the lungs and chest, sinuses or back of the throat. This is as opposed to the presence of mucus that goes away after overcoming a cold, for example.

What Causes Chronic Mucus?

There are several possible chronic mucus causes. Depending on the person, they may have one of the following underlying conditions that leads to chronic mucus causes:1 2 3 4
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Food and mold allergies
  • Allergies that cause hay fever (rhinitis)
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Asthma

People with chronic mucus, post-nasal drip, cough and sneezing may be allergic to certain molds contained in processed foods. Although this isn’t necessarily a serious allergy, it can become more severe and cause certain lung and sinus infections.1 Chronic mucus causes are also linked to certain risk factors. Smoking is known to worsen chronic mucus, especially in people who already have any of the above conditions. Constant exposure to environmental toxins such as fumes and gases can also worsen chronic mucus. This typically happens to people due to their occupation.5

Chronic Mucus Symptoms

Chronic mucus is itself a symptom of other conditions. However, people with this ongoing condition tend experience the following chronic mucus symptoms:

  • Persistent coughing up mucus and phlegm
  • Constant feeling of mucus buildup in the sinuses
  • Continued feeling of mucus at the back of the throat and tongue
  • Constant runny nose
  • Always needing to blow your nose
  • Mucus buildup that triggers a cough or sneezing

People with seasonal allergies may experience chronic mucus at certain times of year more than others. This is often due to pollination that happens during the Spring, which can trigger hay fever symptoms, such as chronic mucus. Several safe chronic mucus natural remedies are available to help reduce persistent symptoms.
