Home Remedies and Herbs for Amoebiasis (Amebiasis)

What is Amoebiasis (Amebiasis)?

Amoebiasis, also called amebiasis or entamoebiasis, is a type of infection of the intestines caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica.1 2 Amebiasis occurs around the world, but is often caused by water contamination in areas with poor sanitation and crowded living conditions.2 3

Areas such as Mexico, India, Africa and parts of South America suffer serious health problems because of the presence of the Entamoeba histolytica parasite.4 The parasite Entamoeba histolytica can live in the large intestine without causing any damage, but sometimes the infection can spread through the blood to the liver, or in rare cases, to the lungs, brain, or other organs.3

What Causes Amoebiasis/Amebiasis?

Amebiasis causes are due to contracting the Entamoeba histolytica parasite. The parasite Entamoeba histolytica is spread from person to person through food or water contaminated with fecal matter from infected people. Food or water is often contaminated when human waste is used as fertilizer. Amebiasis causes also include person to person contact that allows the parasite to spread.3 Certain factors put people at risk for contracting amebiasis. These risk factors include:4

  • Travel to tropical regions and eating unpeeled fruit and uncooked vegetables
  • Pregnancy
  • Malnutrition
  • Old or young age
  • Alcohol use
  • Cancer
  • Using corticosteroids that suppress the immune system

Amoebiasis/Amebiasis Symptoms

Once the Entamoeba histolytica parasite is contracted, it remains in the colon and causes chronic digestive symptoms. Amebiasis symptoms sometimes don’t occur until months or years after the initial infection.1 Sometimes amebiasis can be asymptomatic.2 Common amebiasis symptoms include:4
  • Weight loss
  • Dysentery
  • Colitis3
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Excessive gas
  • Rectal pain during a bowel movement (tenesmus)
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Fatigue
Severe amebiasis symptoms include:4
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Bloody stools
  • Passing 10-20 liquid stools per day
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
