Endometrial cancer is a cancerous condition of the endometrium which is the inner layer of tissue that lines the uterus. Endometrial cancer is sometimes called uterine cancer. Other types of cancer can form in the uterus, including uterine sarcoma, but they are far less common than endometrial cancer.^2,3,4
 
Cancer in the endometrium is the most common form of cancer affecting the female reproductive organs. It accounts for more than 90% of uterine cancers and is one of the most successful forms of cancer to treat, provided it’s caught early on. ⁴
 
There are five stages of endometrial cancer: 

• Stage 0 — Abnormal cells are found in the innermost lining. It’s also called carcinoma in situ.

• Stage 3 — Cancer has spread outside the uterus but not beyond the pelvis.
• Stage 4 — The cancer has metastasized to the abdominal organs.

Endometrial cancer causes are generally unknown. Something occurs to create a genetic mutation in the endometrium. The mutation turns normal, healthy cells into abnormal cells which grow and multiply out of control. The accumulating abnormal cells form a mass or a tumor. These cancerous cells invade nearby tissue and can separate from the initial tumor and spread elsewhere in the body. This is known as metastasizing. ²
 
Most cases of endometrial cancer occur between the ages of 60 and 70. Very few cases occur before the age of 40 which leads medical practitioners to suspect that an increased level of estrogen may play a role. ¹

• Changes in balance of female hormones
• More years of menstruation
• Infrequent periods
• Never having been pregnant

Endometrial cancer symptoms usually present after menopause but occasionally they occur before the menstrual cycle stops. ⁴
