Home Remedies and Herbs for Flatulence (Excessive Intestinal Gas)

What is Flatulence (Excessive Intestinal Gas)?

Flatulence occurs when the digestive tract eliminates gas that builds up in the intestines. Gas naturally makes its way into the intestinal tract, from the stomach to the rectum. Gas builds up as a natural part of swallowing and digesting.1

Additionally, certain foods, such as beans, do not get broken down fully by the digestive process. When this happens, the food remains in the large colon, where bacteria attaches to them and ferments them.1

Flatulence is not a serious issue and is a natural occurrence. However, excessive or painful intestinal gas may indicate an underlying condition.

What Causes Flatulence (Excessive Intestinal Gas)?

Excessive intestinal gas or flatulence causes are due to swallowing a large amount of air. You can intake a large amount of air through overeating, smoking or chewing gum. Other types of flatulence may be caused by certain types of food that don’t get fully digested.2 These foods that cause flatulence include:

  • Cruciferous vegetables
  • Bran
  • Beans and lentils
  • Lactose products
  • Carbonated drinks

In other cases, excessive flatulence can be caused by health conditions such as:

  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Diabetes
  • GERD
  • Ulcers

Some of these conditions may cause flatulence more than 20 times per day, which is above the average.2
