Home Remedies and Herbs for Skin Abrasion

What is Skin Abrasion?

Skin abrasions are also known as wounds, cuts or scrapes. They occur when the skin is punctured or compromised in some way. The role of the skin is to protect your body and internal organs from germs.

There are many types of skin abrasions. They can be incisions, which are clean cuts in the skin. Otherwise they can be lacerations, which are jagged cuts in the skin. Skin abrasions can also be wounds like burns or skin ulcers.

Full skin abrasion healing is usually possible provided the wound is treated immediately and appropriately. While not typically a serious medical condition, skin abrasions leave the body open to risk of infection if they are left untreated.

Additionally, if skin abrasions are deep enough and reach the fat, muscle or bone or there is significant blood loss involved, then emergency medical attention will be required to clean and stitch up the abrasion.

What Causes Skin Abrasions?

Skin abrasion causes usually always result from accidental damage done to the skin. Skin abrasions can occur anywhere on the body that has been injured or impacted. 1,2

Other skin abrasion causes can include:

  • Surgical incisions
  • Chemical or heat burns
  • Animal bites
  • Frostbite
  • Radiation
  • Severely irritated skin rashes that deepen into the skin
  • Untreated skin ulcers that worsen

Almost everyone will experience a skin abrasion at some point in their lives. While everyone is susceptible to skin abrasions, some people are at higher risk of skin abrasions and therefore skin abrasion healing can be more difficult. Here are some skin abrasion risk factors:

  • Poor health
  • Old age
  • Smoking
  • Radiation or chemotherapy treatment
  • Diabetes
  • Steroid use
  • Drug use

Skin Abrasions Symptoms

Because there are several types of wounds, skin abrasion symptoms can vary depending on the cause. Here are some common skin abrasion symptoms to be aware of:

  • Blood or fluid discharge
  • Swelling
  • Pain that can prevent you from using that part of the body
  • Redness
  • Emitting heat
  • Fever (if infected)
