What is Anal Warts?

Anal warts are a form of genital warts. They can occur on both the inside and outside of the anus. Many times, a patient does not realize they are infected with anal warts because they can be asymptomatic. 1

What Causes Anal Warts?

Anal warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus takes many different forms but it is widely circulated through unprotected sexual intercourse. Anal warts can often go unseen for a long time and the patient may not realize that they are infected. 2

How are Anal Warts Diagnosed?

Anal warts are diagnosed by a physician in their office. It is considered a symptom of HPV which is considered a sexually transmitted infection. Due to the fact that anal warts are often asymptomatic they do not cause pain. It is because of this that anal warts need to be diagnosed early. If anal warts are not treated early enough, they can expand and multiply which leads to worse complications for the patient. Examination is usually done with an anoscope inserted into the rectum.3

How are Anal Warts Treated?

Anal warts are treated in a variety of different ways. Some of the treatments include:

  • Cutting the anal warts off
  • Burning the anal warts off
  • Freeze the anal warts off
  • Topical medications to remove the anal warts4

Natural Medicinal Options for Anal Warts

There are a few natural remedies to lessen the problem of anal warts. They may offer some comfort if there are symptoms associated with the condition. They are:

  • Lavender Oil- Used topically, the oil may help soothe the area where the anal warts are located. This would be most effective if the anal warts are located on the outside of the body.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar-This is another topical remedy that may be used. Applying cotton balls soaked in the apple cider vinegar may help alleviate any symptoms of anal warts. It may also allow for bacteria surrounding the anal warts to be lessened.
  • Tea Tree Oil-This oil can be used much in the way lavender would be used for helping to treat anal warts. Tea tree has a natural drying component to its constitution which may dry out the anal warts and allow them to loosen on their own.

Conclusion

When someone is infected with the HPV infection they can develop anal warts. This condition is treatable and, if done under a doctor’s guidance it can be managed. Because it is caused by a virus it is not something that can be eliminated. It is worth noting that anal warts may come back despite treatment. Keeping that in mind, a patient could experience relief from any symptoms by using one or more of the natural options listed above until they can have a discussion with their doctor. Anal warts are not a condition that many people think of but it is a common one. Using a combination of physician directed therapy and natural remedies can keep the condition under control.
