What is HPV Infection (Human Papillomavirus)?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus. Over 100 types of HPV viruses are known and each type affects different parts of the body in different ways. The most well-known types of HPV are the ones that cause warts on different parts of the body, including on the genitals. There are approximately 30 of these types of HPV.1,2
HPV infections are a growing concern because some types can lead to cervical cancer and other types of cancer, depending on where the virus has affected the body. It is estimated that 79 million are currently infected with HPV. And an estimated 14 million new diagnoses occur each year. Around 80% of the sexually-active population is infected with HPV but may not ever know it.1,2
What Causes HPV Infection (Human Papillomavirus)?
HPV infection causes are due to contracting any of the HPV virus types. HPV viruses are contracted through skin-to-skin contact between someone who is already infected with HPV and another person. Generally, HPV is contracted through vaginal, anal or oral sex. The HPV virus can enter into the body when there are cuts, abrasions or tears in any of these areas.1,2
Some HPV viruses will end up producing warts at the site of infection. Warts are highly contagious and can spread by touching.1
HPV Infection (Human Papillomavirus) Symptoms
In many cases, an HPV infection doesn't cause any symptoms. However, the most common symptom of an HPV infection is warts developing around the genitals.2
