Home Remedies and Herbs for Arrhythmia

What is Arrhythmia?

Arrhythmia is the medical term for an irregular heartbeat. Different heart irregularities occur in different people. Some people may have severe arrhythmia caused by an underlying heart condition, while other people may not notice their arrhythmia because it remains subtle.1

Arrhythmia means that either the heart is beating too fast or too slow. Arrhythmia falls into two broad categories:

  1. Bradycardia - A slow heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute.
  2. Tachycardia - A fast heart rate of more than 100 beats per minute.

While most cases of arrhythmia are harmless, some can be severe. If the heart is pumping blood too slowly, then the organs may become damaged by a lack of blood supply. People with arrhythmias can monitor their heart rates and take effective natural remedies for regulating heart rate.2

What Causes Arrhythmia?

Arrhythmias occur when some underlying factor interferes with the heart’s electrical signals. When the heart is unable to control its electrical signals due to a block or delay, it causes the heart to either speed up or slow down its pumping function.2,3

A heart’s electrical signals can be disrupted due to a variety of factors. Lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, drugs, caffeine and certain medications can all affect the heart and send it into an arrythmia state.2,3

Severe stress, emotional distress, shock and anger put the body into a parasympathetic state (acute stress response), causing the blood pressure to rise and increasing heart rate above 100 beats per minute.2,3

Other possible causes of arrhythmia include the following conditions:

  • Heart attack
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart failure
  • Thyroid diseases
  • Rheumatic heart disease
  • Congenital heart diseases
